Friday, September 23 2011 12:24 AM

For Immediate Release (Wichita, KS) WaterWalk, KEYN-FM and featured sponsor GEICO are hosting a military salute and encore concert free to the public on Friday, Sept. 30. The special tribute to military, both veterans and active duty, will take place at 6:30 p.m. followed by a concert by the band Rain from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Commons area located on the west side of WaterWalk Place at 515 S. Main.

The American Legion Riders will kick off the evening arriving on motorcycles flying American and military flags. The Boy Scout Troop 806 honor guard will present the colors. The band will play the national anthem prior to acknowledgment of military in attendance.

“WaterWalk will be decorated in American flags and patriotic colors,” said Doug Rupe, WaterWalk executive vice president. “Honor Flight Wichita will also be joining us for the event. Their organization is taking two hundred World War II veterans to visit their World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., the first week in October. This is a perfect opportunity for us to recognize these important people and offer our support."

Herb Duncan of Honor Flight Wichita said, "We are losing 28 of our Kansas World War II veterans each day; 1,500 nationally. The cost to send one Honor Flight veteran is $650, and we appreciate all the financial support people can offer."

A video camera will also be set up so people can record their appreciation for our military. The video “thank you” will be posted to YouTube. The WaterWalk FanCam will also be on site.

The concert area will open at 6 p.m. Hot dogs, water and soda will be available for purchase from Relish It!, and Blue Bell Ice Cream will be giving away free samples while supplies last. Guests will also be able to purchase popcorn and patriotic cookies.

There will be no alcoholic beverages served during this event and alcohol may not be brought in. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Free parking is available in the WaterWalk parking garage accessible from Main Street as well as the garage at Dewey and Main adjacent to Gander Mountain.
